At 0400 on February 18, 2025, soldiers from the 173rd Airborne Brigade will begin their ascent of Riva Ridge in Italy, retracing the exact footsteps of the 10th Mountain Division’s legendary 1945 assault—on the same date, at the same location, 80 years later.

The 10th Mountain Division scaled the ridge under darkness, carrying heavy packs, and facing enemy fire, in what became one of the most daring and successful mountaineering operations of World War II. Their victory broke the German Gothic Line, helped turn the tide of the war in Italy, and cemented their place in history.

Now, soldiers from HHC, 2-503rd Infantry Regiment, 173rd Airborne Brigade are taking on that same challenge.

In preparation for the full ascent, SGT John Piribek and his team conducted a reconnaissance climb last week, facing deep snow, unpredictable conditions, and steep, icy terrain. Some sections were so technical that they had to rope up for safety and set anchors—a reminder of just how challenging this ridge remains, even with modern gear. Check out their photos in the gallery below.
